In talking through possible themes for the nursery, this client explained that everything she saw on Pinterest just seemed too over the top. They wanted a cute nursery but didn’t know how to pull that off in a realistic way.

This is exactly why I started this business – to help everyday people, with everyday budgets and lives, create a home that represents their unique style.
Your home can be stylish and not be over the top, I promise!

All designs have a starting point, an inspiration or jumping off point. We start with that item and then begin building the room around it. This is SO important because without that foundation, the space cannot be pulled together in a cohesive way.

Sometimes my client already has a piece they love that becomes that starting point. Other times I start building the design around a new item that I show to the client & they fall in with love. It could be a rug, furniture, piece of wall decor or set of curtains. It doesn’t really matter what the item is, as long as it’s something the client loves & HAS TO HAVE in the space.

For these clients specifically, we started with newspaper insert posters they had saved in their sports memorabilia collection. These original NFL Tennessee Titans posters commemorated a very special time in the team’s history. These clients are HUGE Titans fans and this team has special significance for their little boy. This was the perfect starting point for this design.

Additionally, the clients had also thought about painting an accent wall blue, which is a trademark color for the Titans. So a Football theme was the perfect way to incorporate all of these ideas.

The furniture they were planning to place in the room were all in grey tones. So our palette for the room became: Gray & Blue. So now we’ve got our theme & color palette so let’s revisit those posters…

We could hang these posters in a few places around the room. For this particular space, the exact placement isn’t going to be too important to determine in this design but I did know that I wanted to hang 3 or 4 of them. So I asked the clients to pick out their favorite posters to frame. My FAVORITE website to order frames from is Art to Frames. They tend to have a great selection of colors, styles and sizes and they are well priced! So I always send my clients there first.

Ok, so now that we had our starting point, we needed to start building out the rest of the design. My next focus was to think about the main focal point of the room. For a baby’s nursery, it’s almost always the crib. So I wanted to find a piece that could hang above the crib that would enhance that focal point. I actually took inspiration from my own child’s nursery when looking for a sign for this nursery.

The same seller I purchased the sign above from, had a football themed sign for sale as well.

Next on the to-do list was curtains! I wanted to incorporate blue in the curtains but in a fun, lighthearted way – so I felt like stripes would do that & also echo the sports/football theme.

When you’re working on a kid’s room and you’ve got a theme, it’s important to carry that theme throughout the room without overdoing it or making it too matchy matchy. Just like any other space, a nursery should look collected & organic, not like a matching set. So in this space you’ll see nods to the Football theme that aren’t always “in your face obvious” and you’ll also see some outright football themed pieces.

Below are a few examples of obvious football themed pieces we choose for this room:

When you put it all together, you end up with a design plan like this:

This is the inspiration/mood board part of a design plan. It’s the first thing my clients see when they open up their design plan. This way they can get a feel for the space right off the bat. Further down in the design plan, I explain where I’m planning to place certain pieces, why I chose certain pieces. And then I provide a shopping list for where certain pieces are available for purchase & the total estimated cost for all of those items pictured.

These clients have been diligently working on their shopping list. They’ve purchased a few items themselves and also received some as gifts at their baby shower. Everything is set to arrive in time for our design installation date in about 2 weeks! I can’t wait to show you the reveal! 🙂
